Cynnsarill: The Drowning City

The Botanical Gardens

The next morning

After leaving Jesra’s house the party went home to rest and recover, except for Xtuk who went drinking with Big Sunny and used charm person to take advantage of a random bar goer.

The next morning Reilly spoke with Mother Maru. She rose out of the large pool in the back of her chambers and welcomed him. She praised him for his bravery but warned him to temper it with caution. She told him he must be very careful not to lose his mask again and asked him to continue his line of investigation.

Bogug returned to the palace for his butlering duties and to see if he hadbeen missed. While walking down a long hall of paintings a noble woman yelled at him and told him that she had asked him for a drink five minutes ago. When he went to the kitchen to fetch it another bullywug was hurrying out with a drink in hand.

At Jesra’s House

They met up at Jesra’s house and she explained to the party that the Witch Queen had given her a list of ingredients to collect for her. Many were rare and she had been having trouble finding them. The witch queen imprisoned her husband in a painting as an incentive to find them quicker. She asked the party if they would help her find the rest of the ingredients for payment.

1- A lead vial (found)
2- Nightshade oil (found)
3- Honey (Which was in the box Gram had. There are no bees in the city, honey is rare)
4- A mandrake root
5- a cockatrice beak
6- mercury
7- Corpsecap mushrooms (only grow in tombs)
8- A Ghostmaw egg (a type of aquatic creature)
9- A Medusa’s Heart

The party accepted her offer and would be paid 500g to find Mandrake root, the next item on the list. Jesra suggested checking the ruins of the city’s botanical gardens. The ruins of several of the city’s landmarks were outside the city proper in Flotsam, the floating slums of the city. She warned the party that mandrake roots scream loud enough to kill anyone who pulls them up so they may wish to find a way to pull it up from the distance or someone who can’t hear. The party considered getting Steadings the lazy halfling store clerk to pull it up. They also considered finding a dying person to help. Finally they decided to try to find a deaf person.

The party talked to Gram who was resting upstairs. He apologized for the inconvenience of having to save him. The party told him he should leave his wife, but he said everything was fine and she doesn’t get out much. He explained that he finally found the honey through a Bullywug named Glum who is an expert at finding things in Flotsam. He suggested talking to him at the Motley Mermaid Tavern by the waterfront.

Bogug and Xtuk posted an ad in the Lost and Found looking to hire a deaf person to accompany them to the botanical gardens but no one was desperate enough to go. Reilly met up with Glum at the Motley Mermaid who offered to help them find a deaf person and take them to the Gardens for 50g. He explained he could find anything or anyone in Flotsam if it was there.

Reilly also tried to talk to Old Scott, a mariner who washed up in the city years ago. No one talks to him because people from outside the city are considered bad luck. He continued to drink alone in the corner, staring into his glass wistfully.

Flotsam

The party left for the Botanical Gardens the next morning. In Flotsam, the city’s slums, there is no dry land and people live on rafts and boats. Most of the bullywugs in the city live out there as well as some gypsies. It is ever changing as people lift anchor at night so monsters don’t crawl up the chains. The ruins of the city’s Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Museum, Library and Park are located in Flotsam.

Glum pulled out a box containing several shiny beetles. He dumped them out onto the raft and chanted under his breath. The beetles began to walk in strange patterns as he watched them for several minutes. Then he said he had found a deaf person for them and started rowing. Bogug asked him in Frog what he was doing. He explained it was a divination spell his grandfather taught him.

On the way there they passed Big Sunny on the docks having a punching contest with the other dock workers. Reilly wanted in, bets were placed and he knocked over Big Sunny! She blamed it on her hangover and patted him on the back. Xtuk was disappointed and asked if she could help get his money back. She cracked her giant knuckles and said to get Reilly to come out drinking with them one night.

Glum took the party past the gardens to some brightly covered boats with covered cabins on them. They heard singing and dancing as they approached. A teenage Gypsy girl was seated on the edge of her boat playing the violin with her eyes closed. She had big curly brown hair. Glum said this was the person they were looking for. They asked her if she was deaf and could read lips. She nodded. They wondered how she could play violin so well when she couldn’t hear. They told her they would pay her to come with them to the gardens. She thought for a moment and nodded and went inside the boats cabin. They heard a very one sided conversation with an old lady. The party noticed a crack in the side of the boat. They gypsy girl came back out with the old woman who said “Take good care of my Luministra” with tears in her eyes.

1~ The Missing Merchant

The Lost and Found

On a dreary afternoon the adventurers each arrived in the busy Bazaar District of the half sunken city of Cynnsarill. The bullywug Bogug Fong was tipped off about a business opportunity by his demon patron with whom he had a warlock pact. Reilly O’Wong, a human warpriest and member of the Order of the Deep Dragons, was sent by his temple’s leader Mother Maru who was concerned about a missing person. Xtuk was a Satyr and former pirate who washed up in the city. After exiting a local bar he was drawn by the large crowd gathering outside a building, as was the rest of the party. Inside was the Lost and Found, a large indoor market where missing persons bounties are posted and salvaged treasures are auctioned off. The crowd was gathered around the huge central pillar which was plastered ceiling to floor with lost persons flyers. The newest one was causing the commotion, as it offered an unheard of 600g reward for the return of Gram Fastan who went missing the night before. Reilly pushed through the crowd, as he was in his Deep Dragon guard mask and took the flyer to read. Bogug tugged on his leg and asked to read it. While Bogug and Reilly argued over the flyer Xtuk gently liberated it from Reilly’s hand and headed to the address given on the flyer. Reilly and Bogug followed.

The Interview

Outside the large neat house was a line of a dozen or so people waiting to get interviewed for the missing persons job. They were ushered in 3 or 4 at a time, the adventurers being the last three as they had taken the flyer. Inside a fair haired middle aged woman sat at a large desk, above which hung a painting of beach with a satyr seated on a rock gazing at the sea. The woman introduced herself as Jesra Farshore. Bogug recognized the name from a chain of shops called Farshore Provisions. She was the owner of several general stores specializing in exotic and salvaged food goods. The party introduced themselves one by one. Xtuck told Jesra that he liked her painting. Jesra glanced at it nervously and said nothing. She explained that her busiest store’s manager Gram Falstan went did not show up to work in the morning. She is very concerned because Gram is never late and always shows up to work. He was supposed to pick up an item from a salvager before heading home. She offered the party 600g for Gram alive and 300g if they find him dead. The party accepted Jesra’s offer and she gave them directions to the store he worked at as that was his last known whereabouts. She described him as a half elf man with a receding hairline and round gold glasses.

Far Shore Provisions

At Farshore Provisions a lazy red haired halfling named Steadings told the party that Gram left work early so he could get home on time and gave them directions to Gram’s house in Old Town. Steadings also asked the party if they were searching for Jesra’s husband Antonas as well. He told them that he was a satyr and had been missing for about a week. Steadings then put his feet back up on the counter and told the party that if they wanted to buy anything they could just take it and leave the money on the counter.

Old Town

The party considered checking the bar where Gram was supposed to pick up the item after work, but instead decided to head to Gram’s house first. Old Town was a twisting maze of half sunk residential buildings where most of the common people of the city lived. Makeshift sidewalk docks lined the buildings, and it was easy to get lost with a wrong turn. As the party made its way to Gram’s house evening fell and a mist began to rise off the canals. In the fog many figures passed the party, most in a hurry to get to their destination. As a woman holding a baby shuffled past the party Xtuk noticed out of the corner of his eye that it was not a baby she was holding but a wriggling white eggsack. He quickly followed the woman as she disappeared into the fog, but found himself in a dead end ally. The party thought he was seeing things, probably due to all the booze he drank before they left.

Gram’s House

At Gram’s house his wife Sherla, a frazzled human woman, let the party inside and offered them peppermint candies. It was a small neat apartment full of unicorn figurines. Sherla began cry as she talked about Gram, telling the party he came home ten minutes late so she broke down in hysterics. Gram became angry and she locked him outside. She heard him banging at the door for about an hour as she pretended to sleep before he went to take a walk around the block. As the party left Sherla began wiping off the seat where Bogug was sitting.

The Blue Lamb Tavern

The party left to head back to the bar that Gram was known to have visited the previous night when they noticed a broken pair of round gold glasses on the ground. They were next to the ajar door of an abandoned tavern called The Blue Lamb. The inside was ruined, bottles smashed on the floor and moss growing inside. Xtuk noticed the floor infront of the kitchen door was rotted out. Reilly tried to jump over it but missed. His leg punched through the floor boards and was badly injured. He healed himself and met Bogug, who was light enough to walk over, in the kitchen. Xtuk put a table top over the rotten boards and was able to pass. The kitchen had some rusty pots and pans and some glowing mushrooms in the fire place. They took the pots and pans to sell for scrap metal and Bogug made a glow stick out of the mushrooms. It began to rain outside and water streamed through cracks in the ceiling.

Underneath the Tavern

Xtuk entered the pantry in the back of the kitchen and while he was looking through the jars of spoiled foods the ceiling collapsed in on him separating him from the rest of the party. Reilly was able to pry enough rubble out of the barrier to let Xtuk squeeze back through. The party proceded down a long narrow hall which sloped downward and became flooded. They felt something biting their legs and held the light to the water. Dozens of lampreys were swarming around them. After destroying several with hellfire and weapons they made their way out of the water just in time before a feeding frenzy erupted.

As they continued down the hall Xtuk noticed something brushing his sleeve. He looked and saw a white hand pull back into a grate in the wall. He felt very cold and told the rest of the party what he saw. Bogug thought that it might belong to a drowned one, a type aquatic zombie. The party entered the flooded store room at the end of the passage and saw Gram’s body draped over a floating keg. Reilly noticed he was ice cold and barely breathing and cast a healing spell on Gram to stabilize him.

The adventurers set up a fire and began to bandage Gram’s wounds. As Bogug stoked the flames he heard a banging on the walls. White hands reached through the grates in the hallway. Pale zombies came bursting through the walls quietly shuffling towards the party with outstretched hands. As they drew closer all the heat was sucked out of the air and Bogug’s campfire was snuffed out. They fended off several of the zombies and made their escape. Reilly carried Gram though he was badly injured.

The Escape

The party made its way through the winding streets of old town as more drowned zombies pulled themselves out of the canals and pursued them in the pouring rain. After making a few wrong turns they found themselves cornered by more zombies which grabbed Reilly and sucked away almost all his warmth. Xtuk and Bogug quickly revived him and the party made a run for the edge of the Bazaar district where several Deep Dragons stood guard. Noticing the undead pursuing the party, the Deep Dragons hurried over and cast turn undead on the hoard of zombies who recoiled from the light and slowly climbed back into the water.

Reilly took a moment to rest with Gram. Bogug went to get a snack and bought some fish from the market place and roasted it in his hands. Xtuk went tried to pick pocket a large woman outside a bar talking to her dock worker friends. He failed the pick pocketing but instead ended up talking to her. Her name was Big Sunny and she work a striped shirt. Xtuk used charm person on her and she took a shining to him and they drank together until Reilly came to get him. The party headed to Jesra’s with Gram.

Collecting the Reward
Jesra let the party into her study and lent over Gram. She searched the inside of his jacket and pulled out a small wooden box. As she did that two figures in strange white armor phased through the wall. Bogug recognized them as palace guards. Between them an image of the witch queen, an ancient woman seated in a throne wearing elaborate robes materialized. She cackled and demanded the box from Jesra. She quickly handed over the box and the witch queen’s image floated over to the painting above Jesra’s desk. She reached in and pulled out the saytr in the painting and he fell to the floor unconscious. Jesra rushed to his side for it was her missing husband Antonas! Reilly helped carry Antonas and Gram upstairs to rest. Jesra handed them their reward told the party to return in the morning and she would explain the strange circumstances of Gram and Antonas’ disappearance.
